Two women died exactly seven days after giving birth at the Tiradentes City Hospital, , last week. Since then, the maternity hospital has been closed due to suspected puerperal infection. The pregnant women were admitted to the hospital on March 6 and 7 and had normal deliveries. Two days later, they were discharged, but returned with fever and tummy pain.
In an official note, the Municipal Health Department (SMS) reports that the cases presented atypical, with symptoms different from the common ones, and despite the effort of the medical team, both evolved to death. According to information from the SMS, “it is important to make it clear that it is not yet known if the infections were contracted inside or outside the unit, but the preventive measure was taken to avoid new cases.”
The decision to preventively prohibit access to maternity unit was taken by the board of directors, together with the Health Surveillance and also with SMS. Urgent care and emergencies are maintained.
According to the hospital’s board of directors, mothers who were hospitalized at the time the maternity ward was closed will continue to be treated until they are discharged.
